Riding on Ohio's Little Miami Scenic Trail
This paved trail was brought to our attention by an e-mail message
saying "Why do you not have Ohio on your
site? We have wonderful trails!" And he was so right.
We really enjoyed our few days on the Little Miami Scenic Trail.
At that time the trail ran 70 miles. We were notified by a website
user some time ago that
an 11 mile section had been added. We have heard from the website
coordinator for the Hamilton County
Park District that another section is
open bringing the trail to more than 85 miles (the official
opening and ribbon-cutting is June 10).
The newest section is a 2.7-mile segment extending from the trailhead in
Milford through Terrace Park and onto Avoca Park. The notice of the
opening said that the Hamilton County Park District paved an
additional two miles of trail from Avoca to its Little Miami Golf Center.
It also said parking is available at Avoca Park as well as restrooms.
We appreciate the update. We are encouraged to hear that
trails are being lengthened.
Our experience on the trail was riding
through quiet natural areas where you could spot various
kinds of wildlife, through farming areas which I always enjoy,
and through unique little villages where you can find
ice cream shops (our favorite) or other places to buy
prepared food or snacks.
There are places to rent bikes or skates, canoes for
a ride on the river, or picnic
areas where you can rest. There are shops to browse through; what more
could you ask for?
It's a perfect trail for families. The area offers
such a variety of things to do. Check out
Little Miami Scenic Trail for complete details
of what is available, including a map. Also check out the
Little Miami State Park page. Another recommended site is
Bike Miami Valley.
This page has not been updated in quite some time. It simply shares
our experience on the trail. A website that that has been recommended
to us as one being updated regularly, plus it contains maps, is:
Miami Valley Trails.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Xenia, and found it to be
a perfect location. There is a connector trail
linking the Little Miami and Creekside trails
right across the street from the parking lot. We enjoyed
riding out from the motel and being able to stop for
breakfast along the way.
Another thing we really enjoyed was the Air Force
Museum in Dayton. If you have any interest in aircraft
or in the history of aircraft, don't miss it. One word of
warning, we thought a half-day would be enough for us, but it
wasn't. We enjoyed it so much that we went back the next
afternoon. There is far more to
see and it is more interesting than we had expected.
